When you think about a travel website—you know, one that helps out with all your arrangements in nice little packages—you might think, “Oh, that’s just for people who have money to burn. Those sites aren’t helpful for a budget vacation.  You have to do all that stuff yourself if you want to get a deal.” 

And while it’s true that you can plan a high end vacation on Goporta with romantic castles, caviar, and any other bells and whistles you might care to add on, this site can also connect you with hostels, bargain railway passes, and other affordable options. I found that being able to compare all my options on one site was a great way to figure out how to save money.

Between reading articles and looking at the photo galleries, I felt like I took virtual vacation. The cafes, the rivers, the view of Il Duomo at night!  I found myself wishing the site had even more articles, because the ones they have already are great. I especially loved their piece about Making Your Italian Wedding happen. The vision of a wedding table with “bonbonieres filled with pink and white sugar almonds tied to the chairs with white satin ribbon” made me want to go to Italy to get married. Even though I’m already married.  Well, maybe we can just go and eat the bonbonieres. 

They sell some fantastic-looking travel guides on the site too; not the usual fare, but some of the more interesting new books on the market about eating, shopping, and, um, having affairs in lovely Italy. Buying them was simple, thanks to the easy check-out with the Viart shopping cart from Holleyland. (link) I got information efficiently, I picked options efficiently, I did everything efficiently, except dream about exactly what kind of vacation I wanted to take. The dreaming part I’m taking slow, lazy, and luxurious. Kind of like life in Italy.

Just when I thought I was done looking, I noticed that goporta linked to vacation planning options all over the world. A couple destinations caught my imagination, such as a cooking class in the countryside just outside of... Bangkok, the current new hot spot for international cuisine.  And then there was the classic vacation favourite, Rio de Janeiro. GoPorta can sell you tours to the 130 foot tall statue of Christ who stands on top of Sugarloaf mountain, looking out to sea; or to see mulata dancers; or, most importantly in Rio, a pre-arranged roundtrip ride from the airport to your hotel. Believe me, being driven around Rio will be terrifying enough!  (But fun, especially if you like Nascar.) You don’t want to try it yourself.  

Goporta provided me with links to travel insurance, a currency converter, daily Italian news highlights, the whole shebang. There was nothing I could think of wanting to know for my vacation that wasn’t either on the site or linked through the site. To get more of Italy... I guess I’ll just have to go there!
